WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF 5HTP?

5HTP is an amino acid that is already found in the body and is used to produce serotonin. The main benefits of 5-HTP are encouraging weight loss, preventing migraines, and decreasing the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It has also been advised that due to the increased levels of serotonin, it can reduce the effects of depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which can result in a lifted mood and a better night’s sleep.

Furthermore, 5HTP has become increasingly popular as it is argued that this natural supplement can be as effective as prescribed antidepressants which is often preferable to many people to avoid any adverse side effects caused by drugs administered by a medical professional. On the other hand, it can be argued that the effects of 5-HTP are better when taken alongside prescribed drugs.

HOW DOES 5HTP WORK IN THE BODY?

5HTP works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain and central nervous system which creates affects as seen above. Low levels of serotonin often cause depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, weight gain and a number of other health difficulties.

5HTP is said to increase the feeling of fullness which causes you to eat less and lose weight. There are studies to suggest that even after losing weight, 5HTP can counteract hunger-inducing hormones and decrease your appetite, meaning the weight lost will not be temporary.

A study also found that taking 5HTP before bed can decrease the time it takes to fall asleep. This is due to serotonin being able to convert into melatonin which is a hormone that regulates sleep.

HOW MUCH 5-HTP CAN I TAKE?

There are no specific guidelines on the dosages of 5HTP, however depending on your needs this can be advised by a medical practitioner. For instance, if you are aiming to enhance your overall mood, it is said that you should take 50-100mg 3 times a day. Whereas if you are looking to improve your sleep pattern, it is recommended that you take 100-300mg prior to going to bed. On the other hand, there is not enough evidence to suggest that consuming 5-HTP is safe while pregnant or breast feeding so should be avoided.
